If you fancy some sightseeing on a boat, fishing or even snorkelling then try Wester Ross Sea Adventures. Well worth a visit! Based out of Gairloch Harbour/Badachro jetty. Contact John on 07502 144898.
The Gale centre is based in the heart of the local community providing tourist based information, gifts as well as cafe that serves up delicious coffee and cakes made by Gairloch residents.
You can park in the Golf Club car park and wander down a few hundred yards onto the beach. Walk left along to the far end and there is a path that takes you all the way around to the harbour-worth a stroll for the lovely views over the sea!
Another lovely beach. From Gairloch, head back towards Badachro, turn right over the small bridge and on through Opinan.
Another great beach. Head to Poolewe, turn left just before you cross the bridge and follow through Naast and Inverasdale. The beach will be on your right.
Head through Gairloch and towards Strath. Big Sand is then a few miles along the coast on the left and is well signposted. Lovely beach and a very nice cafe.
Head for and go through Poolewe before continuing for several more miles. You will come to small hamlet called Laide, with a shop and petrol station. Turn left and follow the road for several more miles. With a wonderful sandy beach with great views over the sea to the mountain ranges, we suggest taking packed lunch if you’re planning to stay for the day.
As the nearest main town, Ullapool is approximately a 60-90 minute drive away. It is well worth a visit for the drive alone and to sample to local fish and chips! You will also pass Corrieshalloch Gorge along the way. The gorge is marked and has car parking facilities, with a short 5-10minute walk to get to viewing bridge.
Fantastic food and lovely views out on the bay, and if you have a head for heights, a wonderful drive up and over the mountain pass depending on your route in and out. Our recommendation is to take the longer route by heading back towards Inverness and at the mini roundabout, take the road marked for Kyle of Lochalsh. Then pick up signs for Applecross and you will be taken up and over the mountain route. For your return, take the more direct route back along the coast to Gairloch. All in all, a great day out.
At the far north of Scotland lies Durness. With it’s beautiful sandy beaches it’s a great drive and plays home to a fantastic wee coffee shop, where they make their own chocolate on site. If you like hot chocolate it’s worth the drive, albeit there and back is a full day out.
